The cherry blossom season has begun in Paris, which brings me positive emotions. Paris in spring time is one of the most phenomenal cities in the world. When the cherry blossoms begin, Paris changes beyond recognition. Furthermore, the trees begin to bloom in mid-March and remain so for the next few weeks. It goes from being a flashy city to being quite colourful.

Where are the best Paris cherry blossom spots? I will tell you about it below! I think this makes spring the best time of year to visit Paris. It is also the best time for a photographer to capture the beauty of Paris. It is prevalent to see tourists posing for photos in front of cherry blossoms in bloom. Cherry blossoms are extremely popular. Locals have also immortalized them in photographs. Often on their way to work or shopping.

Paris cherry blossom 2022

Paris cherry blossom season 2022 has attracted many foreign tourists to the city. Walking around Paris, you will come across many places with cherry trees and magnolia in bloom from March to April. Finding interesting places off the beaten tourist track can be more difficult. So I decided to get some helpful information and share it with you.

Most magnolia flowers bloom in the second week of March. The blooming process lasts until the end of the month. Notably, the magnolia is not a cherry tree, but it is a crucial tree to admire. 

Best places to see cherry blossoms in Paris 

There are many best places to see cherry blossoms in Paris. So it’s spring, the cherry trees are blooming, and it’s time to see life in pink! There are trees in bloom, and there are cherry trees in bloom. Beautiful, soothing, and even glorious when they are in a bunch – hello Instagram cards -sakura trees are one of those ultimate symbols of Japanese culture. We almost religiously scrutinise their flowering period in Japan, which occurs between January and April, depending on the region. That’s the time of Hanami.

If it is true that the tradition is not as present in France and that cherry trees are rarer, there are many parks and gardens in Paris and Ile-de-France where you can see these famous cherry trees in bloom. Here is a small selection of spots to see them in pink. 

Jardin des Tuileries

The Jardin des Tuileries is one of the most beautiful gardens in Paris. It is located at Place de la Concorde and it has some of the most famous cherry blossom trees in all of France.

Parc de Sceaux

The Parc de Sceaux is a park in Paris’s 12th arrondissement. It is a public park on the grounds of the former Sceaux estate, designed as an English landscape garden.

The “Fontaine des Quatre-Saisons” and the “Tower of Sceaux,” both designed by Jean-Charles Alphand, are among the park’s notable monuments.

The most popular time to visit this location is in the spring, when thousands of cherry blossom trees bloom. It’s also worth visiting in the winter, when it transforms into a beautiful snowscape with an ice rink.

Jardin de Plantes

The Jardin des Plantes is a great place to go for a stroll in the springtime. The cherry trees bloom as soon as the beautiful days begin to appear. We only have eyes for the magnificent Prunus Sato-Zakura ‘Shirotae‘ group, the enormous white-flowered cherry tree with its flattened shape to make an influencer cry if there are several. Go to the Jardin des Plantes in Paris’ 5th district if you want to see a large cherry tree in bloom.

I’m not sure if it’s the largest cherry tree in Paris, but it’s the largest I’ve ever seen. This magnificent tree blooms at the end of April, so you’ll have plenty of opportunities to see it. I also suggest that you take a look at the beautiful white cherry trees during your walk in the park. They are really exciting! 

Square Marie Trintignant

Square Marie Trintignant with a few benches, located on the Philippe Auguste enclosure route, offers a beautiful view of the Seine. After the death of the eponymous actress, it was renamed. It is surrounded by fig trees, lilacs, and cherry trees, which bloom profusely in the spring and cover the ground with pink petals.

Cimetière du Père Lachaise

We are more accustomed to eating dandelions by the roots in Père-Lachaise than to seeing cherry trees in bloom. In this timeless location, however, there are some cherry trees hidden. It’s almost logical, given that the author of Le Temps des Cerises, Jean-Baptiste Clément, is buried right in front of the Mur des Fédérés.

Jardin Tino Rossi (Musée de la Sculpture en plein air)

If you enjoy strolling along the waterfront in a green setting with several cherry trees, don’t miss César Baldaccini, Constantin Brancusi, Alexander Archipenko, Ossip Zadkine, or Jean Arp’s works. Beautiful!

Parc Clichy-Batignolles – Martin-Luther-King

Martin Luther King Park is a relatively new addition to the city, but it already has the makings of a (very) large park. While the first 4 hectares opened in 2007, this epicentre of the 17th arrondissement is constantly changing and will eventually reach a modest surface of… 10 hectares in 2020. And, among the many activities available, strolling among the many cherry blossoms is unquestionably one of the most relaxing.

Even if I only listed my favourite spots to see cherry blossoms, there are still some lovely places to admire them. It’s also worth mentioning the Trocadero Gardens! The trees create an even more spectacular setting than usual by framing the Eiffel Tower. Early April is when they bloom. The trees in the Clichy-Batignolles park are also beautiful. 

Notre Dame Cathedral

You don’t always have to travel far to see beautiful trees in bloom. There are some lovely, large cherry trees in the heart of Paris, just behind Notre Dame Cathedral. Because of their prime location, they fill up quickly, so get there early. Also, while you’re in the neighbourhood, pay a visit to the Shakespeare & Co. café. The famous bookstore’s entrance is graced by a single cherry tree. It may not be the largest, but it is certainly the most beautiful.

The Bagatelle Park            

Bagatelle Park is known for its 1,200 rose bushes, the park is also home to a few cherry trees that will provide a great picnic.

The Paris Cherry Blossom Festival

The Paris Cherry Blossom Festival, which will take place in the spring of 2022, is a one-of-a-kind event. The festival will be an opportunity to enjoy the famous cherry blossom season of Japan in Paris.

The cherry blossom festival will take place at Parc de Sceaux, which is a public park located just outside of Paris. The park is home to about 200 different species of trees, including many cherry trees. Édouard André, a landscape architect, designed the park. He had also designed the gardens at Versailles Palace, including the famous Allée des Cerisiers (Cherry Tree Allee).

Place des Vosges

The Place des Vosges is a beautiful square in the heart of Paris, surrounded by exquisite architecture and a beautiful garden. It is also home to one of Paris’s best cherry blossom spots, with hundreds of trees lining the square.

Montmartre

In Montmartre, there are numerous parks where you can find cherry blossoms, but one that stands out is Square du Temple. It’s a small but picturesque park with plenty of benches and trees for people to watch on a sunny day.

What is the meaning of Sakura, the emblem of Japan?

Traditionally associated with the Hanami festivities, the cherry blossom is an important symbol for the Japanese. Much more than a simple flower, it is part of a multi-century old philosophical trend and is today the emblem of a whole nation.

It was in the Heian period (794-1185) that the tradition of hanami appeared in Japan. Literally, “contemplation of flowers”, hanami generally consists in admiring cherry blossoms with family or friends at the end of March and beginning of April.

If we take advantage of it today to have a picnic and spend a pleasant moment with our friends and family, it is essential to know that it has not always been like this. And for a long time, the contemplation of cherry trees was considered more a philosophical activity than a simple moment of relaxation at the arrival of the beautiful days.

Hanami, which derives from the philosophy of Monono Aware (also known as “the pathos of things”), promotes the beauty of transient objects.

The contemplation of sakura is an event that is treasured at the moment, whether it is a friendly moment with the person sitting at the table, a child’s laughter under the blossoming trees, or petals flying in the wind. It’s a warm moment that only comes around once a year, so take advantage of it, like cherry blossoms, which appear and disappear in the blink of an eye.

Under Heian, the cherry blossom was above all an excellent way to philosophise about the passing of time and the ephemeral nature of life today; the cherry blossom is a moment of introspection turned towards the future. And for a good reason, the sakura blossoms just before April, a significant month in Japan!

As a sign of the coming school year and spring, the cherry blossom symbolises renewal and future happiness. Schoolchildren are used to seeing them waltzing in the wind as they go back to school, and young employees admire them from their offices as this month is also the month of new hires and marks the beginning of the fiscal year in Japan.

Paris is a beautiful city, and it is even more beautiful in the spring. The flowers are blooming, the trees are green, and the air is fresh. Parisians love this time of year because they can spend time with their loved ones. Spring is also a great time to visit Paris because the weather is not too hot or too cold. You can enjoy all outdoor activities like cycling or walk around without worrying about getting too hot or cold.
