• The two best regions for a central stay in Costa Rica are somewhere between San José and Guanacaste. The aim is to be within a short drive of one of the main tourist attractions and close to local amenities. The top accommodations I endorse to my friends and family are: Hotel Grano de Oro ($), Peace Lodge ($), and Nayara Springs ($$$).
• The best region for an authentic local experience and family travelers is Arenal Volcano area. But be aware that it might entail a bit more travel time and a limited selection of accommodations. The hotel I recommend here is the Arenal Manoa & Hot Springs Resort ($).
• The best region with a vibrant scene is the Pacific Coast. If you’re looking to be in the heart of the action, book here, and you’re close to everything. The accommodations I recommend here are Hotel Arenas del Mar ($$$) and Tamarindo Diria Beach Resort ($).

For a first-time visit to Costa Rica, aiming for a 7-day trip, I advocate for two particular locations that offer diverse landscapes, experiences, and are within reach of the country’s finest attractions.

On the central side of Costa Rica, you’ll find the bustling city of San José and the beautiful region of Guanacaste.

Both locations offer great varieties of accommodations, but if I had to choose, I’d lean towards Guanacaste.

It’s closer to natural attractions, offers stunning beach views, and a wide range of dining options. San José, though a bit further north, has a rich city culture and a more traditional urban feel.

The only drawback of Guanacaste is that accommodations may be a bit pricey, which is why San José is my alternate recommendation if you’re on a budget.

Both locations offer a variety of dining options, so after a day of exploring, you can return to your hotel and head out for dinner.

You’ll be near the highlights of this side of the country like the national parks, the vibrant city life of San José, and ample opportunity for adventure in Guanacaste.

La Fortuna, known for the Arenal Volcano, is my top pick. However, if you yearn for a more tranquil and intimate encounter with nature, you might want to consider Monteverde, renowned for its Cloud Forest Reserve.

Both places are perfect launching pads for exploring the north and are within easy reach of each other, providing a comprehensive Costa Rican experience.

With its welcoming atmosphere, natural richness, and proximity to both the beach and the rainforest, Santa Teresa is a hidden gem for visitors seeking an authentic Costa Rican experience.

My Favorite Spots in Santa Teresa

When I made my way to Santa Teresa, it was almost always for surfing at Playa Carmen. It’s such an exciting spot you can’t miss in Costa Rica. The town doesn’t have a ton going on so keep this in mind when you make your way.

Best Restaurants in Santa Teresa

Afterward, you shouldn’t miss dining at Koji’s, which serves some of the best sushi you’ll ever have, or The Bakery, a breakfast hotspot with delicious pastries and coffee.

The views from the top of the hills surrounding the town are pretty spectacular on a clear day. It’s great for getting steps in, as it’s quite the climb.

Other restaurants I love in Santa Teresa are Banana Beach for casual beachfront dining, and Brisas del Mar for authentic Costa Rican cuisine.
